Chapter Fifty-Seven

The sun was just beginning to clear the surrounding peaks on Saturday morning and Jonas and Joe were standing in the San Miguel River in their waders and boots. The river was west of Ouray. They had entered the fast flowing water just south of Telluride. Joe was showing Jonas how to cast for trout. The current was strong and Jonas, who had never done this type of fishing before, was struggling to keep his balance.

“You’ll get used to it,” Joe said.

“And get to like it?” Jonas quipped.

“It’s an acquired taste,” said Joe.

Keeping quiet was the byword for fly fishing. You didn’t want to disturb the fish. But this was more of a bonding session than a fishing expedition and the two talked back and forth to pass the time.

“The Colbys dropped a little bombshell on me yesterday,” said Jonas. “They’re putting their house up for sale and will be moving east. They want to be nearer the kids and the grandkids.”

“When’s all this going to happen?” asked Joe.

“They want to be moved out before the snow falls. Ouray’s not the easiest place to get to and they’re lucky if they see the kids and grandkids once a year. They’re getting a realtor in this week and expect to put the house up for sale almost immediately.”

“So, what are you going to do?” asked Joe.

“I don’t know. They said I could live in the house until it’s sold. They were really apologetic about the whole thing. They said they’d ask around to see if they could find someone who wanted to rent a room. But I’m not sure I want to continue to do that.”

“Having your own place would be a lot more expensive. I’ve got a small one bedroom and I’m barely able to afford it,” said Joe.

“I know Phil Tremain has a spare room, his son’s. If he heard I was looking, I think he’d probably offer it, probably for next to nothing. But living with the boss would not be a good thing. And living in his son’s room, under the circumstances, would be a little spooky. And there’s Phil’s cancer to consider as well.”

“Yeah, that’s probably not a good option,” said Joe. “So you think you’re going to stick around, stay with the paper?”

“I do,” said Jonas. “I like it here. The natural beauty of the area is spectacular. I like the relative quiet, being away from the big city. It’s been a little rough on the people side, getting settled in. But yes, I’m going to stay.”

“Remember, you haven’t been through a winter yet,” said Joe.

“I’m guessing winter will be just as beautiful, if not more so. I don’t particularly like the cold. But I’ve read up on all of the winter activities in the area and I’m looking forward to trying them out.”

Jonas paused for a moment, and then said, “I am a little concerned about having enough to challenge me at the paper. The stories I’ve had over the past few weeks
